What Astrology Is

Astrology is a symbolic system that links the sky to human experience. Practitioners map where the planets sat at the time and place of your birth and draw connections between those positions and themes such as character, relationships and life stages. The result is often shown as a birth chart, a circular diagram divided into twelve zodiac signs and twelve houses, with planets placed inside it.

There are several traditions. Western astrology, the style most people in the UK will recognise, focuses on the twelve signs and the four elements. Vedic astrology, from India, uses a slightly different zodiac and its own timing techniques. Chinese astrology works on a twelve year animal cycle. An astrologer will usually tell you which approach they follow, and it is fair to ask.

What to Expect from a Session

A reading usually starts with your birth details: date, time and town. The time matters because it sets your rising sign and the position of the houses, which change quickly through the day. From there the astrologer talks through what your chart suggests about your temperament, patterns you may notice in yourself and periods that stand out.

Expect conversation rather than a lecture. Good astrologers describe tendencies and possibilities, and they invite you to test what they say against your own experience.

Readings run anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour or more, in person, by phone or over video. Some astrologers send a written report or a recording afterwards so you can revisit the details.
